Activity/Theme/Module:   Optional pre Assessment during the first month of school RW Program
Comments: Remember to record result on RISK WATCH SCORE SHEETS if you are using pretests. The Ready for Risk Watch materials are also available for K-3 grade.

Activity/Theme/Module:   Traffic Safety:

Comments: Many schools focus on Bus Safety in September
                    while October includes National School Bus Safety Week

Activity/Theme/Module:   Fire & Burn Prevention
Comments: National Fire Prevention Week is October 7-13 – Theme: Practice Your Escape Plan

Activity/Theme/Module:   Pedestrian Safety
Comments: International Walk to School Day is October 3, 2007
Halloween also provides a great opportunity to focus on walking safely.

Activity/Theme/Module:  Fire Arm Safety
Comments: Hunting season starts in October & November
Gun (hand and hunting) safety is year round issue

• December
Activity/Theme/Module:   Choking, Suffocation & Strangulation
Comments: December has many holidays – Toy Safety is a logical focus.

• January
Activity/Theme/Module:   Home Safety, Winter Storm Safety
Comments: January is Home Heating Safety Month
January is also a great time to teach about Winter Storm Safety and Preparedness.

Activity/Theme/Module:  Child Passenger Safety
Comments: National CPS Week may be in both February & September in 2008 – materials from NHTSA are pending.
MIEMSS has a DVD & Posters for All Ages traveling Safely

Activity/Theme/Module:   Poison Prevention
Comments: March is poison prevention Month
Look for a new poster contest from the Poison Center

• April
Activity/Theme/Module   Falls & Playgrounds
Comments: April is National Playground Safety Week
Playground safety is year round

• May
Activity/Theme/Module   Bike Safety
Comments: May is Bike Safety Month
Rodeos and safety checks

Activity/Theme/Module   Water Safety
Comments: National Boating Safety Week starting with Memorial Day each year.
Water Safety topics for open water and pools.

• June
Activity/Theme/Module   Summer Safety
Comments: Traveling safely, Swimming safety, & Fireworks safety

• July
Activity/Theme/Module   Firework Safety
Comments: Children and Fireworks do not mix. Please encourage families to attend professional fire work displays.

• May & June
Activity/Theme/Module   Hurricane & Storm Safety
Comments: Each year FEMA, American Red Cross and the National Weather Service provide updates on the June - November Hurricane Season. Materials are included in the Risk Watch Natural Disasters Curriculum.
